| Fantastic Ego is one Ged Gengras. Part troubadour and part mad genius, Fantastic Ego pours out some sick instrumental jams but also doesn't shy away from some heavy vocals. Mr. Gengras has put out two Phantom Limb releases now and we're ecstatic about having him here with us in the city of Angels and Angles. |
| Fantastic Ego is the recording name of Ged Gengras of The Antique Brothers and also the stunning Thousands. And while “Trips the Light” is definitely not the most original of releases, it´s for sure one of the best psych folk releases of 2007 so far. Gengras takes lots of cues from Six Organs of Admittance and also from Current 93, but what he does starting from there is pretty damn great and in the end not so derivative at all. There´s lots of heavy psych electric guitar on all tracks, but it gets best when Gengras adds his own ethereal voice to it. And there´s pretty much everything else present on “Trips the Light” that a psych folk fan can ask for. Repetitive Fursaxa like vintage organ on “I´d like to be”, meditative guitar ragas on “Busted Turnstile” and “Hiding Smoke” and double tracked voices. Even classic rock fans won´t be disappointed. After all, the drum machine based “Toeing the Line” is classic American highway rock, complete with a nasty guitar solo and all. Towards its end, the disc gets even nastier. The long “Tape Loop Symphony No. 1” is threateningly meditative and the Tubeway Army cover “Down In The Park” as dark as it gets. All of this gives a cohesive picture of the abilities and mindstate of Ged Gengras as Fantastic Ego. A highly recommended disc. 8/10 -- Stephan Bauer (30 April, 2007) |
